Brilhart Tonalin Great Neck New York 5* Tenor Mouthpiece Circa 1940’s (Ref 222)

Selling on behalf of the Estate of the late great jazz player and teacher, George Galway R.I.P..

Here’s a great opportunity to take ownership of this rare Brilhart Tonalin Tenor sax mouthpiece.

1940 – DESIGNED BY ARNOLD BRILHART – Version 2:
The second version of the “Designed by Arnold Brilhart” mouthpiece was made from August 1940 until January of 1942, and were also made in Great Neck, New York. The Tonalin, Ebolin and Tonalite models were made, as well as the hard rubber. They all had the tip openings marked on the table.

Excellent condition, hardly any marks.
Tip Opening: (1/100mm = 245), 0.097″ or 97, Chamber = Round top/bottom (narrower at top), flat sides.

Includes: mouthpiece, no ligature or cap.

The Brilhart Tonalin mouthpiece was an extremely well loved mouthpiece design that had a gentle rolling baffle and shaped walled tone chamber. This resulted in a full rich sound that was particularly appealing to the genre of styles at that time. The tonal results were magnified by the use of plastics in the material from which it was made whereas using Ebonite would have dulled the sound character too much.

Description

This mouthpiece is part of the Estate of George Galway who passed away aged 79 in October 2020.

He began playing the saxophone professionally while still in his teens, as part of many dance showbands in late-1950s Belfast.

He moved to Manchester in the 1970s and began a successful career as a music teacher, but still gigged constantly all around the country.

George didn’t slow down in any way until about 2015, and having lived the world of jazz for nearly seven decades, he had built up an immense repertoire and wealth of knowledge about the saxophone instrument, with its many brands, series, metals, construction and playing techniques, mouthpieces and so on.
He carefully selected each piece over the years – both for their monetary investment value, as well as the personal joy he got from using them on one of his many saxes.
